  • Silhouette Discount for EC2 Readers!

    Silhouette Discount for EC2 Readers!

When we first started blogging, we had some goals… silly ones like- have anyone outside of our immediate family read the blog, get over 25 hits a week (yes, a week!), and somehow get a Silhouette cutting machine! Honestly, having a Silhouette was like the litmus test of having"arrived"- it's funny to think that we never in a million years would have put"have a tv show" on that list!
Anyhow, last year we finally got a Silhouette Cameo and now we're excited to let you know that we're partnering with Silhouette America as ambassadors- that means we get to offer you guys exclusive deals and discounts (wootwoot!)
Last winter one of my favorite Christmas projects (inspired by a display I saw at Next. in London) was this modern-meets-rustic art! Check it out: Illuminated Deer Art

It would have taken me forever to print, trace, and cut the deer silhouette onto card stock. It took me about 1 minute using my Cameo! Boom!
Jess and I were just introduced to the Silhouette Glass Etching Starter Kit. Now, we can etch whatever our little hearts desire on glass!! Before, we were kind of limited to what glass stencils were on the market. Check out these cute projects using the kit…
Umm, hello cutest fish tank ever! Maybe all of our fish wouldn't die, if I had made them a cute tank!

I also loved this vase idea- I just think it's so cool to be able to customize something you already own like a clear vase and make it work with your style!

So, Jess and I just ordered an Etching Kit, and I'm guessing you'll see us using it in a home project or on Knock It Off really soon!
Now's the time for you to get a Silhouette if you've been wanting one, because since we're Silhouette rookies, we get to give you guys an awesome starty-up deal! Jess and I totally paid full price last year- this deal is ah-mazing!

Here's a breakdown of the deals we can share with you… (1) A Silhouette CAMEO® plus a glass etching starter kit will be $269.99, which is the same as receiving $30 off the retail price of the Silhouette CAMEO® ($299.99) and a free glass etching starter kit included. (2) A Silhouette Portrait™ plus a glass etching starter kit will be $129.99, which is the same as receiving $70 off the retail price of the Silhouette Portrait™ ($199.99) and a free glass etching starter kit included. (3) A glass etching starter kit with no machine for $29.99, which is 25% off the regular $39.99 price for the kit.

To order your Silhouette at the special promotional rate make sure you use this link and then enter the code EASTCOAST at checkout!
We're really excited to work with Silhouette and thrilled to offer these deals to EC2 readers! If you already own one, you've gotta share some tips with us- we're still learning all that they can do!

  • You Should Know About This

    You Should Know About This

In talking to a few of my friends, I realized that the majority of them had NEVER heard of GroopDealz, which is just wrong. This is not just another social group coupon site, like Groupon or Living Social. While I've used those sites for cheap tickets and activities, which is awesome, GroopDealz is a whole different ball game. GroopDealz was started by a group of women from Utah who wanted to help other Stay-At-Home-Moms make money during the recession. Basically, they feature one deal a day, based on your geographical area, that is handmade and unique- they often have Etsy stores offering deals at 40-90% off! If you haven't heard of Etsy, then shame on you. (Stop everything, and go there right now. You can thank me later.) You'll receive deals on jewelry, hair bands and bows, knit hats, home decor, accessories, vinyl and so much more! This is such a great way to buy unique gifts for friends, family or yourself, at a huge discount.

Just a sampling of some of the items offered through GroopDealz…

I missed this deal, but I SO wish I had bought one, or two, or fourteen of these for my daughter. Adorable!
Click here to get started on GroopDealz, and let the fun begin!
Happy Monday, and Happy Shopping!; )

  • Merry Christmas to You! {Sponsor Special}

    Merry Christmas to You! {Sponsor Special}

You know what make us thankful? Besides our families, good friends, this blog and each other (of course!), it's Black Friday! So, while Monica is living it up in London and Paris this week, I'll be doing some die-hard shopping with my hubs. Love that man and his passion for finding good deals. (Would you believe he is MORE into Black Friday than I am?!) However, some of the best things you just can't find in brick and mortar stores, and that's what I'm bringing to you today. I've rounded up some red and green favorites from our awesome sponsors. Without them, this blog would not be, so show them some love and snag some good deals this weekend at their shops.

    1. Kelly Green Crocheted Scarflette from Twysted Yarn. I am all about scarves this time of year, and this one is too cute! Order by December 6th for Christmas delivery. Use the code ECCFAN to get 10% off your order! 2. Last year, I purchased 12 Christmas books at Liberty Thrift store, and did a 12 days of Christmas countdown. Each day we read a different Christmas story. I LOVE this tradition, and Liberty Thrift makes it possible to do it inexpensively (Photo credit: Katherine Maries.com) 3. This Joy to the Lord Print from Red Letter Words is so beautiful and would make a great gift or a perfect accessory for your own walls. Plus, you just can't beat that message. Get 20% off all Black Friday weekend! (No coupon code necessary.) 4. I adore this Ikat Decorative Pillow Cover from our newest sponsor, Chic Decor Pillows. It's so stylish, but totally ties in with traditional Christmas colors. You HAVE to see the tons of pillow covers in their shop. Gorgeous stuff, folks! Beginning at midnight on 11/23, everything in the store will be 15% off!

    5. You better believe that I'll be doing a few Christmas printables this year using this Gem Christmas Digital Scrapbooking Paper from Moo & Puppy. I'm telling you, the possibilities are endless! Use the code EC215 for 15% off your order. 6. I can't get enough of this Red/Orange Paisley Headband from Henle. I'll be buying a few of these for my sister and girlfriends this year (shhhhh…don't tell!) 7. Isn't this Pendant Light with Red Enamel Shade from Lucent Lampworks so much fun? Love the pop of color in this industrial style light fixture. I can't WAIT to show you what Brad designed for my dining room. Ummmm…let's just say, it completes me. Oh wait, I mean, the room. Use the code EC2tenoff for 10% off your order!

    8. I know this isn't all that Christmasy, but my goodness, I adore this Herringbone Pattern Wall Stencil from Royal Design Studio. I'm running out of wall space, but I'm determined to incorporate this somewhere-anywhere- in my house. All stencils shown in black and white will be 30% off on Black Friday (go here for the sale!) 9.Buy a few of theseQuilted Jar Candles in Spiced Pear from CJS EcoChic for a quick and easy neighbor, hostess or teacher gift. You can never go wrong with candle, especially soy ones that last forever! 10. I'm thinking another awesome gift for a teacher would be this Medium Utility Tote in Red Parisian Pop from Thirty-One Gifts filled with fun books for the classroom, survival items (chocolate and coffee, anyone?) or extra supplies.
Where's your favorite place to shop on Black Friday? Do you have a plan of attack, or do you go at it all crazy-like?

  • Veranda: Life in Ruins

    Veranda: Life in Ruins

Have you seen the August issue of Veranda yet? If not run out and buy it now! Pictured on the front is a French house that was once a ruin. Why couldn't someone have discovered America sooner than 1492 so we could have a few ruins? I wouldn't mind living in a stone ruin, who cares about a little rubble when it looks this fabulous? If I can live in an 18th century dwelling with all it's quirks a little ruin is nothing!

(All photos courtesy Veranda, photographer: Peter Vitale)

Look at the inside guest patio, those 15th century curved stone arches, that antique tile floor'''now I ask you who wouldn't be happy there?

The house was originally built in the 11th century and added onto each century. The kitchen area dates to the 17th century, love how they simply plastered over the arches. Just think if I could afford that house I wouldn't have to cook except when I wanted to.

The chairs in the Renaissance hall look to be covered in tapestry that more than likely came from Michel Biehns' shop since he deals in textiles of all sorts. As an antique textile dealer myself it's killing me I can't see those chairs closer. And look at those pillows in the background hiding from me!

I could sleep in this master bedroom all draped in Italian silks. That pillow on the bed is antique Italian silk velvet, why don't they just shoot me now? One of my passions is Italian silk velvets, I'm a collector as well as deal in velvets and I can't see that pillow well. I NEED TO SEE THAT PILLOW!

Can you believe this is the dressing room? I wonder if it's up those stairs pictured in the master bedroom? I love how they're storing their hats in the French laundry baskets and look at that dreamy mirror, love the juxtaposition between the gilded mirror and straw baskets. Look at the baskets on top of the closets, they give you a sense of the height in the room.

The 17th century staircase is original to the house and was restored, think of the entrance you would make coming down those stairs! Love the huge picture at the top too!

All the silk fabrics just in this small dining room come from Antico Setificio Fiorentino in Florence Italy and can be found Here. Those sconces and chandelier are to die for! And those chairs....come to Mama! They're in that French Parisian green I love so much!
I love how they used a nice mix of highs and lows of antiques and modern furniture so that nothing overwhelms, tough to achieve. I wish someone would come out with a magazine that shows all the accessories that decorate rooms so we could see more clearly....not to be I guess. I won't spoil the entire article for you but I couldn't resist, who wouldn't want to live in France in all that history?

  • Why We Need Insurance {Strickler Insurance}

    Why We Need Insurance {Strickler Insurance}

Ok, all you know we loooooove a good deal and saving money, so here's a little story for you. You're familiar with this room, right? It's my basement.

Before we ever did our first Nate Show makeover, our finshed basement (the one Monica redesigned) flooded. Not once, but twice, and ruined everything. We had to tear out some drywall and all of the carpet, all the while crying about how much it would cost to redo everything. It was a nightmare, and sooo discouraging.

This is NOT my basement, but you get the idea.
Thankfully, right before our second flood, we switched our home owner's insurance after talking with a friend about it. The guys at Strickler Insurance have revolutionized our insurance experience. They're independent consultants, (not affliated with AllState, State Farm etc), so they can offer you a million options. They've single-handedly saved our family $900 a year for insurance, and my in-laws $1600!! Crazy, right? And they're absolutely legit, if you were wondering. We have the same, if not BETTER coverage than we ever had before. We're not messing around with all of the awesome stuff down there.

    DIY Barnwood Coffee Table
Now that our room has been beautifully redecorated, we're taking extra precautions, but we know Strickler has our back.

You totally need to call them and get a free quote- this is some serious saving-of-the-hard-earned-cash, people! (Plus, they're throwing in a free Wawa gift card for every quote they give out, so why not?) Oh yeah, one more thing: for all you ladies (and men!) with home-based businesses, like ThirtyOne Gifts, Pampered Chef, Scentsy etc., check out Element Insurance, which deals with everything related to a home-based business!

Make sure you ask for Josh Heebner at 610-701-8257, or email him at josh@stricklerinsurance.com, and he'll take care of you! Now go forth and save money!

  • Lost that Loving Feeling?

    Lost that Loving Feeling?

This is a t-shirt that I actually own, made for me by one of our good friends. Not completely true, but still so funny.
My hubs says we're in a"passing phase". The kind where life is crazy trying to manage our jobs and home and raise two, well-adjusted kids. We often feel like we are two people who coexist, doing what needs to be done to make our children's lives happy and secure, but without connecting with each other. While we are totally in love with our kids, and soooo grateful for the blessings in our lives, we miss spending time with one another. I'm telling you all of this because we truly WANT to spend more time together, but we're realizing this is just one more thing we need to be intentional about. (Want to know more about my motto for the year: be intentional? See here, here and here.) Anyway, I'm sure you all can agree that building a strong marriage is, next to having a saving faith, the most important thing we can do for our families. So, I've been on a quest to find fun, cheap and easy date ideas to reconnect and just enjoy each other.

This idea is brilliant and such a fun gift idea for the hubs. Make 12 envelopes and fill them with a pre-paid date idea for that month. At the beginning of each month, sit down and plan a night for your date and you're set. This definitely requires a lot of planning, but once it's done, you have NO excuses not to go out on a date!

Source: shannonbrown.typepad.com via Jessica on Pinterest

The The Dating Divas are a group of women whose blog's sole goal is to provide all sorts of different date ideas. From Quick and Easy Romance Ideas, to Anniversary Ideas, to Date Nights Out on the Town, to Family Fun Nights, they've got it covered! I was impressed with how many fun, romantic and inexpensive dates they thought of.

Source: thedatingdivas.com via Janenifer on Pinterest

I found this fun list of unique date ideas on Pinterest. Some of them actually made me giggle just envisioning the hubs and me doing them (see numbers 3, 5 and 6), and others made me wish upon a star that they would happen in my lifetime (see number 8).

Source: 9gag.com via Lindsey on Pinterest

And finally, did you know that Groupon now offers special deals on getaways? I'm loving getting them in my inbox every week, and I actually convinced the hubs to book this one:

I'm so excited, but we still need to set a date. That's the tricky part, but we'll keep trying until we find one that works. And here's the pep talk for the day: Make sure you do whatever it takes to strengthen your marriage. It's worth it!
So, fill me in. What do you do to keep the spark alive?

  • Target Dollar Bin Mantel

    Target Dollar Bin Mantel

We're really psyched about guest posting today on I am Momma Hear Me Roar today! I made some really cute floormats and shared the details over there. Head on over and say hi from East Coast Creative! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I bet you never expected to see those words together, did you? Ha! I can't keep myself away from the dollar bins at Target. I spend many dollars at the dollar bin, thankyouverymuch. A few weeks ago I felt like I hit the jackpot with their new line of adorable nautical-inspired decor, gift bags, stickers, notebooks etc. The color scheme is soooo cute (aqua, coral and white) and I just couldn't resist. I have a few little projects in mind for the gift bags- no, not as bags to hold gifts- and the stickers, but here's what I did with the rest of my loot:

I filled three nautical gift boxes with succulents (I'm lazy so I left the plants in their pots),

and stuck this cute vintage-looking sign in next to my candlestick and old lantern from my Grandma.

After adding my blue dollar store vases (I've officially revealed how cheap I am now) and one of my favorite sailboats from our travels to Greece, my nautical-themed mantel was complete!

Can you believe those cuties were $1 a pop? Thank you, Target, for helping me to decorate my Summer mantel!

Have you scored any sweet deals in the dollar bin recently?

Don't forget to follow our Haven escapades on facebook while we're away! We're so excited to meet some of our blog crushes and can't wait to share all we learn when we get back!

  • Brass Fireplace Update

    Brass Fireplace Update

Even though gold jewelry is back in style, a dated, brassy fireplace can put a major damper on the style of a room! Updating your fireplace can seem overwhelming, but let me tell you it's not as hard as it seems and if you're really determined (like me) you can get it done less than 24 hours!

Here's the story behind this makeover… One of my best gal pals was moving into a new house, so I trucked on down to Maryland to help move and to try to tackle a few fun projects. The fireplace wasn't even something they had thought of me working on, but the moment I walked in, it was SCREAMING for some DIY love from me.

Here's the order of my steps: 1- Whitewashed the brick2- Painted the mantle and built-ins3- Painted the brass surround****************************************** How to Whitewash Brick:

Whitewashing brick is really simple! You'll need an inexpensive paint brush, a plastic container, a rag, water, and paint. I mixed the paint and water with a ratio of 1 part paint to 3 parts water. If you want more coverage, increase your paint and for less coverage increase the water.

Start in one corner and work in small sections. Your paint mix will be really thin, so you'll want the rag in hand to catch any drips. Brush your paint mix on a 1x1 area and then immediately use your rag to rub it deeply into the brick and then remove any excess. The process goes really quickly, but I'll warn you it's a little messy. The grout can be a tad sandy, so you'll definitely need to vacuum when you're done. The whole fireplace and hearth took me less than 30 minutes. The difference in color is awesome!

After whitewashing and painting the shelves and mantle, it was time to get rid of that brass! My exact words to my gal pal Mandy were,"Do you trust me?" and I'm so glad she did! How to spray paint a brass fireplace surround: There are some key items you'll need to do this project right: Frog tape, craft paper, disposable plastic drop cloth, and Rust-oleum High Heat Ultra Spray Paint

Rust-Oleum 241169 High Heat Ultra Enamel Spray, Black, 12-Ounce

We started off by taping off the brick right around the surround. Make sure that you get it as close as possible. We were lucky enough that the tape could slip behind the surround, so there was no chance of bleeding through. Once the edges are take care of, you'll want to use the craft paper and tape to make sure all of the brick is covered. It's sorta like wrapping a really big, awkward present!

Once the brick was covered, we cut a section from the plastic drop cloth and wrapped the mantle in it. We were really careful to make sure we'd taped it tightly, so no paint could sneak in.

For the glass doors, we used more tape and paper. I found that if I used a spatula, I could get the tape really close to the edges for a perfect, crisp look.

Now it was time for a little craziness… Making a spray paint cocoon! Since we were spraying in the house, we needed to seal off everything. Basically, I got in, and we sealed the drop cloth all around me. WARNING: the fumes will be very strong. I recommend a face mask. I didn't have one, so we used a towel.

Thankfully, this paint is awesome and doesn't require more than one solid coat. I, on the other hand, required about 3 showers before all the black paint was off my face and hands! It was totally worth it though!

Here's the finished product. Doesn't it look so much better?

I'd love to show you a perfectly styled mantle, and all the doors on, but we were on a tight time schedule, and I had to get back to PA. So this was DIY on the fly!

I was so pleased with the update and loved that the entire project took about 4 hours of work time and cost less than $30.00! If you have a fireplace that you were wishing you could change, I totally recommend doing it yourself! The impact it can have on a space is incredible! And if you missed it, Jess transformed her fireplace with some paint and a stencil this past summer. Two updates= no excuses not to get rid of those dated fireplaces, people!

And, I just have to add, that only only is Mandy one of my very favorite people in the entire world, she's all a rockin' sponsor of this very blog!! She's our Thirty-One Gift's Consultant and hooks up our readers for all kinds of giveaways and deals! Christmas is coming people, head over to Mandy's website HERE and check out the awesome products they have in the current catalog! I'm so loving the new Metro bags! Tell me, do you or someone you love have an outdated fireplace that's in need of an intervention?
**UPDATE 7/13/13: Due to the popularity of this post and lots of reader questions, I thought I'd answer a few of the common questions here.Q: What kind of paint did you use on the brick? A: We just used white paint we had on hand. It was eggshell and worked fine. I really think any finish would work okay because you're watering it down anyhow.
Q: What color did you use on the mantle and shelves? A: Ahh! I wish I knew! I am calling my friend now and will see if she still has the can. I do know it was from Lowes: )
